Book Review: No-One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday, by Tracy Bloom
Ok I admit it, I occasionally enjoy escaping into "chick-lit", and when No-One Ever Has Sex On A Tuesday came up on the kindle bestsellers list for just 99p, I thought I'd give it a go.
The publishers description reads:
"Never has a one-night stand led to such chaos!
Childhood sweethearts Matthew and Katy agree they must never see each other again after they end up in bed together following a school re-union.
So all is forgotten... until eight months later when a shock meeting at an antenatal class forces them to confront the fact that Matthew could be the father of Katy's baby. Oblivious to the mayhem unfolding, Matthew's highly-strung wife frets over giving birth to twins and Katy’s much younger boyfriend refuses to take fatherhood seriously.
Love and life are messy but Katy and Matthew take things to a whole new level as deep emotions begin to resurface and hormones run riot.
How will they navigate their way through this almighty cock-up?"
I liked the honesty of this book, the characters were people you can see everyday, and although the situation is dramatised, it is still very believable. However, whilst reading any novel of this ilk you want to feel sympathetic towards the main character, this for me is where this book fell a little short. Katy often comes across as a bit of a selfish bitch to be honest, and in that respect it's quite hard to really root for her. The character I did find myself enamoured to was, the slightly annoying but ultimately loveable Ben... I can't help but think this would have been a more enjoyable read if it was written from his perspective.
From a comedy point of view there were some genuine laugh out loud moments, mainly in the dialogue between characters, it's fluid and totally believable even at it's most ridiculous, which is probably the main strength of this book.
The plot line as a whole is very predictable. Anyone who didn't guess the ending by the third chapter has clearly never read any other chick-lit, or watched a rom-com in their lives.
All in all, this is a nice enough read for an unwind on a rainy afternoon or whilst lying on a beach... as long as you don't mind kinda hoping it does go tits-up for the heroine, as she sort of deserves it.
